Boeing’s pilotless flying car completes its first flight

Boeing offered a glance at a futuristic alternative to crowded streets and Elon Musk’s underground tunnels when its prototype autonomous passenger air vehicle (PAV) – essentially a flying car with no driver – lifted off the ground for the first time on a test takeoff that lasted less than a minute.

Boeing executives are convinced they are on the right path to developing on-demand autonomous air taxis. Boeing has released video of a test flight showing its autonomous passenger air vehicle lifting off, hovering for a short time before making a controlled landing. The next steps in these flight tests will be much more challenging: transitioning from the vertical takeoff and hover phase to forward and wing-borne flight.
